Is block paving or tarmac better for a Guildford driveway?
Both make excellent driveways. Block paving offers more choice of colour and pattern, adds kerb appeal and can be lifted and relaid if a repair is ever needed. Tarmac is usually quicker to lay and often more cost-effective for larger areas. We are happy to quote for both so you can compare.
How long does a block paved driveway last?
A well-built block paved driveway can give many years of service. Its lifespan depends mainly on the quality of the sub-base, the drainage and the edge restraints, which is why we put so much care into the groundwork. Regular sweeping and topping up the jointing sand help keep it looking its best.
Which laying pattern is best for a driveway?
Herringbone patterns, laid at 45 or 90 degrees, interlock strongly and are generally recommended for areas that take vehicles, because they spread the load and resist blocks shifting under turning wheels. Stretcher bond and basketweave suit paths and patios. We can advise on the best pattern for your drive.
Do I need planning permission for a block paved front driveway?
Not usually. In England, planning permission is only needed to pave more than five square metres of a front garden if you use an impermeable surface that drains onto the road. Using a permeable surface, or directing rainwater to a lawn or border to drain naturally, avoids the need for permission. A new dropped kerb needs separate approval from Surrey County Council.
